Gender inequality in academic staff retention

Research on gender disparities in faculty retention reveals persistent patterns of higher attrition rates for women across academic fields. Spoon et al. (2023) found that women leave academia at higher rates than men at every career stage, with particularly high attrition seen at lower-prestige institutions, in non-STEM fields, and among tenured faculty. Their findings indicate that women often feel "pushed" from their roles due to workplace climate rather than being "pulled" by better opportunities elsewhere. This research underscores the need to address the underlying, gendered reasons for faculty departures to improve retention systematically.
