“But will her husband move?”

Female academics with male partners may be confronted with bias because of their relationships when looking for a job. This is shown in research by Lauren Rivera, recently published in American Sociological Review. Selection committees take the relationship status of female candidates into consideration, where they do not do it when considering male candidates. For example, search committees are concerned that the partner would not be prepared to move for his wife's job and this makes them less inclined to hire the woman.
